Shaaban: Russian-Chinese UNSC veto marks a historical event
Political advisor to the Syrian President Bouthaina Shaaban said that the Russian and Chinese veto marks a historical day for the UN.

The two countries used their right to veto a UN Security Council resolution that allows strict measures to be taken against the Syrian regime. Shaaban told AFP that this day is noteworthy because China and Russia stood by the Syrian people in the face of injustice

“The Syrians are glad to see two powerful nations stand in the face of hegemony and military interference”, Shaaban said. Shaaban considered that Russia and China, by vetoing the resolution, gave the Syrian regime enough time to implement reforms in order to guarantee diversity in political views.

“I would like to thank Russia and China for sparing Syria the hardship endured by Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Pakistan”, Shaaban added.

On the other hand, the Head of Syria’s National Council, the key opposition committee, Burhan Ghalyon said that the Russian and Chinese veto will only encourage more violence in Syria.

“Supporting Syrian President Bashar Assad in his military and fascist project will not encourage the Syrians to maintain a peaceful demonstration”, Ghalyon said, adding that Russia is effectively promoting violence in Syria.
