Fierce clashes in China leave 21 people dead

A local Chinese official reported on Wednesday that 21 people, including police officers and social workers, were killed in fierce clashes in China's region of Xinjiang.

A state run news website reported that gun fights broke out when police went to search the home of locals on suspicions of possessing illegal knives.

6 gang members were killed during the violence, while another 8 more were arrested, the official said without giving further details.

Xinjiang, is home to around nine million ethnic Uighurs, whom constantly protest the religious and cultural repression by Chinese authorities.

The region regularly witnesses unrest and China has repeatedly accused ethnic Uighurs of carrying out terrorist activities in the province.
