Macron says France enters new phase of 'advanced' nuclear deterrence

President Emmanuel Macron on Monday said France was entering a new phrase of "advanced" nuclear deterrence, as he laid out how the European Union's only atomic arsenal could protect the continent.

"We must strengthen our nuclear deterrent in the face of multiple threats, and we must consider our deterrence strategy deep within the European continent, with full respect for our sovereignty," he said from France's Ile Longue nuclear submarine base.

He called for "the gradual implementation of what I would call advanced deterrence".
