Bus accident in India leaves 19 people dead

An Indian official reported on Monday that at least 19 people were killed in India when a bus fell into a canal in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

23 others were injured and transported to hospitals after the accident.

11 of the victims belonged to one family which was returning to New Delhi city after attending a wedding in the town of Aliganj.

Witnesses said that the driver of the bus lost control while trying to avoid a truck.

India is known for its bad road safety record, speeding vehicles and poor driving.

The World Health Organization's report on road safety 2013 found that 8% of India's road victims were bus drivers or their passengers.
