At the launching of a new campaign for polio vaccination, Minister Abou Faour called on all Lebanese citizens to revaccinate their children even if they were vaccinated during a last year’s campaign.
On the 4th of March, Minister Abou declared the launching of the comprehensive national vaccination campaign against polio.
He also noted that the campaign achieved several accomplishments, mainly by declaring Lebanon a polio free country 12 years ago.
Polio is endemic in just three countries - Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan, but sporadic cases occur in other countries.
Worldwide, cases of polio decreased from an estimated 350,000 when the campaign to eradicate it began in 1988 to 223 reported cases in 2012, according to the WHO.
In 2013, not including the cases in Syria, there have been 296 cases.
