REPORT: LF leader Geagea: Boycotting election session is not a constitutional right
Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea held on Wednesday a press conference in Mehrab in which he decried MPs boycotting the election session dubbing their action unconstitutional.

"The main task of parliamentarians is to hold the election of a new president for the country and not to obstruct it."

Geagea stressed that what is currently happening on the Lebanese political scene is a "total coup d'état against the Lebanese constitution and parliamentary norms."

He voiced his hopes that the March 8 alliance would declare its candidate for the presidential elections.

The LF leader stressed that hindering the presidential bid would "marginalize" the country's top post, adding that the situation in Lebanon will never be rectified so long as the country does not have a strong president.

He urged religious figures, especially the Maronite Patriarchate, to obligate all MPs, especially Christian, to exercise their duties and elect a president.

Lebanese MPs failed in the first, second and third rounds of the vote to elect a new president due to disputes between the March 8 and 14 camps.

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea, who is the March 14 alliance's only candidate, failed in the first round to obtain the needed two-thirds of votes of the 128-member parliament.

In the second and third rounds, March 8's MPs boycotted the session, resulting in a lack of quorum.

March 8 did not yet officially announce its candidate. But the camp’s figures have reiterated that Lebanon needs a consensual person in the country's top Christian post.

President Michel Sleiman's tenure ends in May 2014 but the constitutional period to elect a new head of state began on March 25.
