Many towns and cities witnessed electoral races, with political battle dominating over the elections.
Jounieh witnessed a heated battle as the electoral machines turned into beehives.
In the capital of Kesserwan, two listings are competing for the municipal elections, one of them is headed by Fouad Boueri, while the second one, “Karamat Jounieh” (Jounieh’s dignity), is headed by Joan Hobeich and backed by the Free Patriotic Movement and the Kataeb Party.
In Sin el-fil, two tickets are contending as well, one of them is headed by the current municipal council's head Nabil Kahaleh and supported by the Kateb Party and MP Michel Murr.
The second is headed by Joseph Chaoul and backed by the FPM, the Lebanese Forces and the Tashnag Party.
In Antelias, the lists competing are two: A list headed by Elie Abou Jaoude and backed by MP Michel Murr and another headed by Elie Safi and supported by the FPM, the LF, the Kataeb Party and the Tashnag Party.
In Jal el-Dib, two lists are competing, the first one backed by the FPM and the LF. The second one is supported by MPs Michel Murr and Nabil Nicolas who told LBCI that the battle in the area is “developmental par excellence.”
The lawmaker said that “he abides by the decision taken by the FPM command.”
In Hadath, a high voter turnout were witnessed since the very early morning and two rival lists, one backed by the LF and another backed by the FPM, are competing for control of the town’s local council.
This as two lists are contending in Kahale, which includes 2350 voters.
In Choueifat, there is a fierce competition between a ticket backed by the Progressive Socialist Party and another supported by the Lebanese Democratic Party.
In Ghobeiri, a list formed by Hezbollah and the Amal Movement is competing with one formed by civil societies and families.
Loyalty to the Resistance bloc MP Ali Ammar said that the voter turnout is “very good,” urging all the voters to head to polling stations.
Damour’s streets were unusually busy early Sunday as citizens headed to polling stations to elect a new municipal council amid competition between two lists.
In Jbeil, where elections were running smoothly, a list headed by the city’s mayor is contending a lady who is backed by the secular group “Citizens with a Sate.”
In this regard, former Minister Charbel Nahas told LBCI that the nomination of Ms. Claude Marje is a democratic act, which aims at building the state.
In Bekfaya, former President Amine Gemayel cast his vote.
Gemayel said that “the municipal elections should be linked to development and should not have a political aspect.”
“We hope that these polls would lead to the election of a new president and to holding the parliamentary vote,” he added.
For his part Kataeb Party chief MP Sami Gemayel said, “We chose to avoid political alliances in the elections and allow the people to make their own minds.”
In response to what was reported in the media over the boycott of al-Freidess town residents to the municipality elections because the Interior Ministry withdrew the candidacy of the Druzi member and reduced the number of municipality members; the Interior Ministry explained that the decision to reduce the number of municipality members had been issued two months ago and is nothing new, for it was published through the official newspaper, and was posted on the ministry’s website.
