Feltman: Lebanese officials must live with a different Syria

US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman hoped that the Arab initiative will be a first step towards ending violence in Syria.

Fetlman underscored the importance of getting Arab monitors into Syria and getting the detainees out of prisons, urging the Syrian regime to withdraw all armored vehicles from the streets.

Feltman told a TV station that the best way to protect Syria is for President Bashar Assad to stop killing civilians, adding that the UN Security Council intends to follow up on the work of the Arab League.

Speaking on the Lebanese situation, Feltman stressed that Lebanese officials have distanced themselves from the repercussions of regional events.

“Assad will not stay in Syria forever”, Feltman said, adding that Lebanese officials should think hard and gear up for a peaceful transition in Syria.

“No matter the stances of Lebanese officials regarding Assad, they must realize that they will have to live with a different Syria”, Feltman said.
