Sarkozy urges Assad to step down

French President Nicolas Sarkozy urged Syrian President Bashar Assad on Tuesday to step down over "disgusting massacres" against his people.

Sarkozy told an audience of French military personnel that the international community should assume its responsibility by denouncing the brutal repression that inspires "disgust and revulsion.”

The French president added that Arab monitors should have absolute freedom in order to carry out their mission in due form.
