Washington warns Khamenei against Hormuz Strait closure

The U.S. used back channel communication to warn Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei against the closure of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, according to the New York Times.

The newspaper quoted anonymous U.S. officials as saying that the White House called the Islamic Republic’s Supreme leader, warning him that closing the Strait of Hormuz will elicit an American military response.

Regarding this back channel, the officials only said that it is not the Swiss embassy which is the usual channel used by Washington to communicate with Tehran.
