Palestinian camps rack up $120 million electricity bill, won’t pay

Electricité du Liban (EDL) reported that it has not received payment for power sold to the Palestinian camps since 2003. The amount due is estimated to be $120 million. The Lebanese electricity provider confirmed that 25 billion LBP will be added up each year to the current debt since there is no party who has taken responsibility for payment.

The cabinet urged UNRWA in 2003 to take necessary measures to pay off the debt, however, the organization was not responsive given that it had already turned down similar requests from other countries.

The Palestinian refugees also suffer from electricity outages due to rationing and the difficulty in dealing with the power providers.

EDL is aware that collecting the money owed will not happen any time soon while it also bears in mind that cutting the electricity off the camps is an unlikely measure to spare the refugees further sufferance.
