Jumblatt: Syrian regime oppressed the Alawites just as it did to others

National Struggle Front leader MP Walid Jumblatt warned against viewing the Syrian revolution as a sectarian conflict. “The Syrian regime oppressed the Alawites just as it did to others; the issue here is not about sectarian affiliations”.

In his weekly statement to al-Anbaa newspaper, Jumblatt voiced surprise at the stance taken by Lebanon that expressed reservations on the Arab statement aiming at lifting oppression and putting an end to what he called “the persecution and genocide against the Syrian people”.

Jumblatt recalled that the Progressive Socialist Party was the first one to call for the establishment of the STL, adding that it would be better to fight arguments with counter-arguments and evidence with evidence within the Court and not through the media.
