Has Arabsat fallen victim to the Arab Spring?

On Wednesday, the Arabsat network of satellites were jammed after another satellite provider Nilesat fell victim to disruption within its frequencies last year.

Telecommunications Minister Nicolas Sehnawi said, during a field visit to the satellite broadcasting station in Jouret el Ballout, that the disruption has Ethiopian sources, adding that the immediate reasons remain a mystery.

Sehnawi contacted Arabsat officials to secure the needed frequencies and equipment to prevent further jamming and cutouts in transmission.

TV stations that rely on Arabsat to broadcast their shows have incurred great losses.

Arabsat could have simply been the victim of collateral damage intended to harm another channel. Furthermore, the purposes behind such an act could be political in light of the unrest sweeping the region, according to Sehnawi.
