Iran conducting military exercise in response to western sanctions
A top commander from Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard said on Monday that Tehran's decision to conduct their latest round of military exercises was in response to the US and EU decision to impose tough new sanctions targeting Iran's oil sector.

"All this is the result of the threats the West and the US themselves made regarding banning Iranian oil," Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari told Iranian state television.

"It's the West that is suffering losses as a result of these reactions (made by Iran) and the tension in the region. A major effect of the crises they create is a hike in oil and energy prices," he added.

The two days of exercises are the latest in a series of maneuvers held amid escalating tensions between Iran and the West over Iran's nuclear program.

The US and Israel have not ruled out military strikes against Iran's program, which they claim is aimed at developing weapons technology.    Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.
