American mold threatens Lebanese honey

The latest storm that struck Lebanon burdened Lebanese farmers with a new problem.

Beekeepers in Lebanon, especially in Halta in the Hasbaya district, are facing a problem that began several months ago only to be exacerbated by the recent bout of wet weather. Beehives across the country have been stricken with a specific type of moisture-loving mold called “American mold”.

Beekeepers say that they have suffered major losses, adding that they are not receiving any help, neither from the Ministry of Agriculture nor local officials.

The honey produced by this Lebanese town is considered one of the finest in the market given the region’s diverse range of flower species.
