Sami Gemmayel: We refuse a history book mentioning only one resistance
MP Sami Gemmayel criticized on Tuesday the repeated debates over several issues, particularly the issue of a unified history book. “There is selectivity in the approach to Lebanon’s history”, he added.

Gemmayel recalled during a press conference that, for the past four years, they have been calling for a history book that recounts all facts and leaves room for interpretation.

Gemmayel voiced fear that the entire previous phase and the sacrifices made will be lost leaving no lessons for the future.

Gemmayel said that it is not permissible that the new history book talk about one resistance only , “selectiveness in this regard is a red line.”

“We will call for educational disobedience in the event that the tabled unified history book draft is approved,” he added. “We are not calling for sidelining any party but rather to acknowledge a fragment of the Lebanese as well as their achievements, we are also demanding to call things as they are. It is unacceptable to blot out an entire era from 1975 and 1976.”

Gemmayel stressed that the history book should recount facts and embrace the different parties’ views, adding that Lebanon is a pluralistic country that should give the student the right to evaluate their country’s history.
