Activist and whistleblower Tarek Mallah and 3 others were arrested Tuesday (July 27) after blocking the road and allegedly assaulting the vehicle of Social Affairs Minister Rachid Derbass.
Civil society activists had launched a campaign against the Lebanese government and officials who have failed to resolve the pressing waste issue, in a sustainable, eco-friendly manner, blocking various roads in Beirut.
Lebanon has been grappling with a waste crisis following the July 17 closure of the Naameh landfill. The cabinet pledged last year that the said landfill would be shut down and an alternative site would be found, however failed to live up to its promises.
