Organizers of a protest campaign against the Lebanese government called for a fresh demonstration on Saturday, without saying where the protest would take place, after two days of rallies that turned violent in central Beirut.
The "You Stink" campaign has mobilized around the government's failure to deal with collecting trash. Scores of people have been wounded during clashes between police and demonstrators.
The campaign also called for the annulment of the tenders announced by Environment Minister Mohammad al-Mashnouq earlier today, and the reassignment of the waste management task to the municipalities.
During a press conference, the campaign noted that the cabinet’s use of the Independent Municipal Fund turns the waste management tender into a public funds theft operation.
In this regard, the organizers added that some parties are attempting to turn the matter into a sectarian conflict, vowing to reinforce their organizing capabilities during all upcoming movements.
