REPORT: Interior Minister Mashnouq: There was an excessive use of force during August 22nd’s protest
Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq stressed Wednesday that the Security Forces come from the Lebanese people, noting that whoever sees otherwise "suffers a case of national blindness.”
 
The minister added that they will exert utmost efforts to maintain security within protests, “but will not tolerate assaults on governmental institutions and will use force in such cases.”
 
Commenting on the events that took place during August 22nd’s protest, Mashnouq said that there was an excessive use of force, where rubber bullets and tear gas grenades were used, stressing that shots were fired in the air not at the protesters.
 
In this regard, he revealed that two officers were referred to the Disciplinary Council, while 6 soldiers were given disciplinary punishment for acting without referring to their superiors, adding that some officers were reprimanded for leaving their communication devices behind.
 
The minister stated that the number of injuries among security forces is greater than the protesters, noting that 146 members of the Security Forces were wounded.
 
“Demonizing the policy of Security Forces is considered a crime,” he said.
 
In a press conference held to announce the results of investigations into August 22nd’s protest, Minister Mashnouq said that drug abuse was confirmed in the case of 4 detainees, adding that the number of civilian detainees reached 18, including one Sudanese national and another Syrian national, who were referred to the Military court.
 
“I did not say that another state is supporting the protesters, but I said that there is an Arab state standing behind the riots, I did not mention Qatar and I will not do so before the end of the investigations,” he explained.
 
In the same context, he said that the only path towards change is through the election of a new president and the approval of a new electoral law.
