Cabinet convenes over trash crisis

Prime Minister Tammam Salam held a cabinet session on Monday to discuss a plan to export Lebanon's waste.

Prior to the session, Interior Minister Nouhad Mashnouq said that “he feels upbeat about today’s session,” stressing that he will submit the file of Civil Defense volunteers as their demands are rightful.

He was referring to an open-ended sit-in announced last week (December 19) by Lebanon's Civil Defense volunteers to call on the government to finalize their employment decrees.

For his part, Minister of Finance Ali Hassan Khalil confirmed that “he is against raising gasoline prices to fund the garbage exportation plan.”

This as Environment Minister Mohammad Mashnouq expressed hope that “a happy end would be reached in the waste treatment file.”

Meanwhile, civil society activists gathered outside the Grand Serial, condemning “the government’s recklessness and its preference of personal deals at the expense of people.”
