Gunmen attack police in north Nigeria
Gunmen believed to be from a radical Islamist sect attacked a town Wednesday night in northeast Nigeria, setting a local police station ablaze while gunshots rang out hours into the attack, witnesses said.       

The fighting focused around the town of Damagum in Yobe state, between the state capital Damaturu and the city of Potiskum, two areas that have previously seen violence by the sect known as Boko Haram.

The assault began with a massive explosion at the police station, which witnesses said appeared to catch fire.   

Gunshots continued to echo hours later.
