REPORT: You Stink activists stage fresh protest

Activists from the “You Stink” campaign gathered on Monday morning on the Dora highway, while others gathered near the City Center mall, the Hazmieh and the Khaldeh highways to protest the landfills that will be established by the Lebanese state.

Security forces worked on dispersing the activists from the middle of the Dora highway in Dora, as reinforcements were brought to the area.

This as the security forces also arrested a female activist identified as Rita Hanna after she sat on the asphalt attempting to cut off the road in Dora.

In another area, demonstrators partly blocked the Khaldeh and Hazmieh highways but were reopened by police.

The activists urged the Cabinet to find an environmental and sustainable solution for the waste crisis, vowing to further escalate their movements.

The Cabinet convened on Saturday at the Grand Serail whereby it approved on re-opening the Naameh landfill for two months only as well as re-activating the Costa Brava and Bourj Hammoud landfills amid reservations made by the Kataeb party.
 
Lebanon has been plunged into a waste management crisis after the shutdown last July of the Naameh landfill where the garbage of Beirut and Mount Lebanon was dumped.

The closure resulted in the accumulation of garbage on the streets across the country, sparking environmental and health warnings over the prolongation of the problem.
