REPORT: Verdict in Samaha's case to be issued within two days

The Military Cassation Court, headed by Judge Toni Lattouf, asked on Thursday a two-day deadline to issue a verdict in the case of former Minister Michel Samaha.

Samaha will remain in custody until a verdict is being issued.

Samaha’s lawyer Sakhr Hashem said that the atmosphere is “positive,” adding that he gave his closing arguments in the case.

“We hope the issued verdict will satisfy everybody.’ He added.

Samaha, was arrested in August 2012 and charged with attempting to carry out "terrorist acts" following allegations that he and Syrian security services chief Ali Mamluk transported explosives and planned attacks and assassinations of political and religious figures in Lebanon.

Samaha was sentenced in May 2015 to four-and-half years in prison, but in June the Military Court of Cassation annulled the verdict and ordered a retrial.

Last January, he was released on bail under a ruling that stirred controversy across the country.

Under the bail conditions, Samaha was banned from leaving Lebanon, speaking to the media or using social media platforms.
