REPORT: Samaha’s sentence stirs chain of reactions

Future Movement leader MP Saad Hariri commented on Friday on the sentence issued against former Minister Michel Samaha via his Twitter account.

“The verdict against terrorist Michel Samaha corrects a former lighter sentence which we have all rejected and announced that we won't accept,” said Hariri in a tweet.

“The terrorist Samaha is returning back to jail today. It is the normal place for anyone who plans to kill innocent people and drag the country to sedition and civil fights,” Hariri added.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq said: “The sentence of the military court of cassation shows our righteous trust in the court and its members.”

For his part, Head of the Arab Tawhid Party Former Minister Wiam Wahhab said that “what Samaha did is despicable and unacceptable, if the judiciary aimed towards all corruption files, no one will remain outside prison.”

A court sentenced earlier former information minister Michel Samaha to 13 years of hard labor in prison after a retrial on charges of smuggling explosives and planning attacks.

He will serve 13 years in the al-Rihannieh jail with hard labor with his civil rights being stripped off.
