Parliament’s joint committees discuss electoral laws

The Parliament’s joint committee held on Wednesday a meeting at the Parliament to discuss the electoral draft law submitted by Speaker Nabih Berri and the draft law submitted by the Lebanese Forces, the Future Movement and the Progressive Socialist Party.

Following the session, Deputy Speaker Farid Makary declared that discussions were postponed until next Tueaday, adding that “the talks were serious.”

For his part, Future MP Ahmad Fatfat noted that his party will continue to reject the electoral law based on proportionality as long as “illegitimate weapons remain spread across the country.”

For his part, MP Ali Fayad noted that the “best case scenario would be the drafting of a new electoral law and the worst case scenario would be resorting to the 1960’s law.”

Meanwhile, Lebanese Forces MP Georges Adwan stressed that holding the parliamentary elections under the 1960’s law “is an indirect form of extending the parliament’s term.”

As for MP Alain Aoun, he noted that the municipal elections showed that the Lebanese people have an “ability to change.”

“The municipal polls demonstrated that the proportional law is the best one for the parliamentary polls,” he added.
