REPORT: Berri warns of ongoing Litani River 'pollution disaster'

Speaker Nabih Berri warned of the ongoing and exacerbating contamination disaster of Lebanon’s Litani River, calling on all concerned parties and apparatuses to immediately discharge their duties to protect the river from all violations, whether from sand quarries or sewage.

Berri said during “Wednesday’s gathering” that the bill of the Litani River Basin applies to the necessary legislation, stressing that the dossier should be given the highest priority.

Sand quarries along the shores of Litani River have muddied the water from the southern side, mainly in the towns of Tyre and Nabatieh.

Ten quarries in the outskirts of al-Kherdali town and al-Aishieh dump all their waste into the river, while the authorities turn a blind eye.
