House Speaker Nabih Berri commenced Tuesday a new dialogue session at his Ain el-Tineh residence, stressing that the election of a new president will be a top priority during talks.
MP Walid Jumblatt commented over a possible presidential solution saying that “there are struggles but matters need a little more patience”, adding that they agreed with Berri to proceed with the dialogue.
Following the session, Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil said that “they will not accept any electoral law that does not depend on a single standard and foundation.”
Head of the Lebanese Democratic Party, MP Talal Arslan stressed that “everyone agreed on committing to the Taef agreement, explaining that the solution starts with the election of a president.”
For his part, Telecommunications Minister emphasized that “no agreements were reached on the electoral law."
“It’s sad that we running around in a loop reaching nowhere.”
“We’re seeking to reach a mutual understanding” Harb said, while hoping those sticking to their positions and the idea of one nominee to alter their stances.
In the same framework, MP Ali Fayyad stated that “the session did not result in anything new, despite its significance."
“The main point is to push towards a big change in the electoral law and Berri will be proposing an initiative,” he added.
It is worth noting that aside from today’s session two consecutive national dialogue sessions will be held in the two following days amid low expectations that the political foes, which have failed for more than two years to elect a president and endorse an electoral law, will be able to make headway on these two contentious issues this week.
