REPORT: 44th presidential election session adjourned

Head of the future bloc MP Fouad Siniora stressed Monday that progress has been reached during the national dialogue session regarding the need to take into consideration the Lebanese constitution, adding that the only solution is the elect a new president.

After adjourning the 44th presidential election session until September 07, Siniora said that his bloc is still supporting its candidate MP Sleiman Frangieh, explaining that they did not support the nomination of MP Michel Aoun during the bloc’s meeting, but each member expressed his opinion.

For his part, member of the Lebanese Forces bloc MP George Adwan emphasized the need to abide by the constitution, which imposes the priorities that include extending the State’s authority across the Lebanese regions and ensuring fair representation in the parliament.

He also stressed the need to elect new president and to pass a new electoral law, noting that unconstitutional institutions can never replace the constitutional bodies.

Lebanon has been without a president for more than two years and rival political blocs, backed respectively by rival regional powers Saudi Arabia and Iran, have failed to reach an agreement on who should fill the vacuum.
