Activist Tarek al-Mallah calls for investigating new rape case at orphanage
Civil society activist Tarek al-Mallah ended on Wednesday a hunger strike he has declared earlier the same day outside the Ministry of Social Affairs, protesting a new rape incident inside the Dar Al Aytam Al- Islamiah in the region of Ouzai. He went back on his decision after Social Affairs Minister Rashid Derbass met his demand and called for an investigation into the new rape case.

After the divorce of his parents, al-Mallah was sent to the Islamic orphanage (Dar Al Aytam Al- Islamiah).

According to Tarek, he was raped by 3 older boys at the age of 9. This was not a one-time incident; Tarek was reportedly raped repeatedly for almost 4 years.
In 2008, Tarek escaped from the orphanage. He spent 3 years at his grandparent’s house before he finally decided to tell his story to the media.

Also, he sought the help of the Ministry of Social Affairs which reportedly did not cooperate with him.

He also participated in several protests organized by the civil society against the corruption ravaging in the country.
