Phoenician burial ground discovered in Tyre

A historical site dating back to the Phoenician era was freshly discovered in Tyre on Tuesday.

The burial ground located on a hill near the sea shore, at the northern entrance of the city, was discovered by the land owner. As he was conducting rehabilitation work, skeletons were found buried in the sand.

The owner notified the Directorate General of Antiquities (GDA) which, in turn, rushed to the scene and dug the site to find human and animal skeletons.

GDA said the remains were in good condition and date back to the fifth and sixth centuries BC.

Head of the GDA, Ali Badawi, said the directorate is working on moving skeletons of their place after removing sands they were buried in. "

This discovery ought to bolster further studies and provide more information about traditions, customs, and artistic production of Phoenicians," he said
