Jordanians pledged their support to refugees worldwide by signing a large public petition in downtown Amman.
The event, organized by the UN Refugee agency, was held under the slogan #withrefugees, ahead of the World Refugee Day on June 20.
Jordan hosts the sixth highest number of refugees in the world, according to the UN In addition to Iraqi and Palestinian refugees, the country is home to more than 1.4 million Syrians.
UNHCR's Nida' Yassin explained what the petition was about.
“We are trying to incorporate the communities we are living in, whether inside Jordan our outside Jordan, asking them to support us by signing their names in support of the refugees. Signing their names means they support that refugees deserve a good education and a safe place to live in,” she said.
“Every person is important, and this is a responsibility for everyone in the world, not just in Jordan,'' said participant Duha Bleible.
The UN aid agency said they were facing a funding gap of more than $1 billion for the Syrian crisis in 2017, of which $187 million was needed to continue providing aid and cash assistance for refugees in Jordan and Lebanon.
UNHCR said the campaign will continue till a global compact for refugees is adopted in 2018.
