REPORT: Syrian Democratic Forces make headway in Raqqa battle against Islamic State

Islamic State positions suffered more assaults from coalition air strikes on Friday as the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) targeted further gains from the militants, including the recapture of a strategic hospital.

Under the banner of the SDF, an alliance of Kurdish and Arab militias are fighting to take Raqqa back from the jihadists, who took control of the Syrian city at the beginning of 2014.

With air strikes and special forces from the U.S.-led coalition, the SDF pushed into Raqqa in June 2017 after advancing on the city's outskirts for months.

Islamic State militants attacked the U.S.-backed forces east of Raqqa on Friday, setting off clashes and abducting a number of people, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
