Unions demand reforms in Casablanca protest

Thousands of trade unionists demonstrated against the Islamist government of Moroccan Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane in Casablanca on Sunday May 27.

According to the Middle East Online website, the unions accuse Benikrane's Islamist Justice and Development Party of failing to deliver on promises of social justice made during last year's election campaign, which handed power to the moderates.

Organizers estimated 50,000 people joined the protest although police figures were half that amount, according to Middle East Online.
