German and Israeli presidents meet in Jerusalem

German President Joachim Gauck met his Israeli counterpart in Jerusalem on Tuesday where he reaffirmed Germany's close relations with Israel.

"Germany and Israel are more closely related to each other than ever before through common values, but also through common interests. Apart from the very painful past, which separated us, I am now thankful for a presence that is characterized by friendship and the hope for a good future together.” Gauck told Israeli President Shimon Peres during an official reception in his Jerusalem residence.

Gauck met Peres at the start of a four-day visit to the region where he was scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman and other Israeli leaders.
