Bassil from Moscow: Lebanon will respond to any attempts at outside interference

Lebanon's Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil said in Moscow that he hopes Saad al-Hariri, who resigned as prime minister on Nov. 4, would return to Beirut after he completes his visit to France.

He said that the main aim now is that Hariri can return to Lebanon without any conditions or restrictions on his freedom and, once back in Lebanon, that he can decide whether to step down as the prime minister.

He said that Hariri should still be considered as Lebanon's serving prime minister. Hariri's visit to France was aimed solely at securing his return to Lebanon, the agency reported.

"Sovereignty is not for sale and the country will respond to any attempts at outside interference, Bassil said following his meeting with his counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow.

During the meeting, the minister stressed that “there is an attempt to diverge Lebanon from the positive track and an intimidation campaign in order to eliminate its power in fighting terrorism,” stressing that Lebanon was for the first time on the verge of signing contracts to extract natural gas from the sea with Russian participation.

“Lebanon was moving from stability to prosperity,” he noted.

For his part, Lavrov noted that the solutions for the Lebanese crisis must be purely Lebanese and immune to any foreign interference.
