Several amendments were added to the new electoral law based on proportionality, but its main stipulation remained to distribute the seats equally between the Christians and the Muslims, ignoring a decision by former Interior Minister Ziad Baroud in 2009, allowing the citizens to cross out their religious affiliation from the civil status records.

The Interior Ministry stressed, in a statement to LBCI, that these citizens cannot run for the elections, unless they present a certificate from the sect they belong to, despite them crossing out their affiliation.
