The National Election Authority (NEA) of Egypt announced Friday that it will stop accepting candidates’ objections of other candidates to run in the election, effective immediately.
Incumbent President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and chairperson of El-Ghad Party Moussa Mostafa Moussa are the only two confirmed candidates for presidential election which is scheduled later for March.
Unlike el-Sisi who applied for the presidential race long time ago, Moussa presented his candidacy documents on Monday, minutes before the deadline for candidate registration. This aroused public curiosity, which was followed by media reports on Moussa's support for el-Sisi.
It is widely believed in Egypt that Moussa will hardly pose any practical challenge to the incumbent president during the race, which is also proved by the numbers of endorsement the two received from the members of Parliament - 549 for el-Sisi and only 20 for Moussa.
Citizens seem to have shown the same support.
President el-Sisi will win the election. He has done a lot during his governance, for example, the new Suez canal project and many other things,” said a local resident.
“El-Sisi will win because everyone will vote for him,” said yet another resident.
The electoral campaigns will kick off on Feb 22, and the 2018 presidential election will be held from March 26-28.
