Vatican spokesman: Pope’s visit to Lebanon still on despite Syrian tension

Vatican's spokesman Father Federico Lombardi confirmed on Thursday that the Pope’s visit to Lebanon is still on and preparations are ongoing despite the Syrian crisis.

Fr. Lombardi’s remarks came after doubts emerged that the visit might be called off due to the situation in Syria.

Fr. Lombardi also confirmed that the Holy See is exerting assiduous efforts to guarantee the success of the visit scheduled for September 14.

In this context, “Vatican Insider” website reported that “a number of points are being examined by the diplomats in cassocks. The first and most obvious is the exportation of the Syrian war to northern Lebanon. Tarablus (Tripoli) has been the scene of bloody clashes for weeks now, with medium-calibre weapons being used among Islamic factions taking orders from different parties. These incidents are a clear sign that Lebanon could explode at any moment.”
