Rai: Naturalization decree contradicts Lebanese Constitution

Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros Rai criticized on Sunday the naturalization decree, saying "it contradicts the preamble of the Lebanese Constitution, which stipulates that there will be no division or resettlement."

In his Sunday’s sermon in Bkerke, Rai stressed that the Lebanese citizenship should only be given to those of Lebanese origin.

"There are thousands of cases of people of Lebanese origin who want to restore their nationality," Rai stressed.

On another note, Rai said that he conveyed his deep concerns to French President Emmanuel Macaron over the file of the Syrian refugees in Lebanon.

He also noted that he asked Macron and the International community "to separate the political situation in Syria from the returning policy, while encouraging the refugees to return home by guaranteeing the refugees' right to citizenship."
