There are at least 15,000 child beggars across the streets of Lebanon, who are being exploited by their parents or other groups.
These sights were supposed to disappear since 2012 when the Social Affairs Ministry proposed a mechanism to prevent street begging.
The Ministry told LBCI that the total number accounted for of child street beggars was at the time much less than the real number, adding that the number of associations that take on these children is not enough and 95% of them belong to families who exploit them and send them to beg in the streets.
According to a recent study conducted by the national project to fight street begging, there are 15 thousand child beggars in Lebanon, 67% of them are Syrians, 12% Lebanese and 21% of other nationalities.
The study also estimates that this number is expected to reach 20,000 children by the year 2020.
