Foreign Ministry explains controversy over not inviting Syria to Arab summit in Beirut

The Lebanese Foreign Ministry stressed that the controversy raised over not inviting Syria to participate in the 2019 Arab Economic and Social Development summit to be held in Beirut next January, is not in the right place.

In this regard, Director of the Minister Gebran Bassil’s office, Ambassador Hady Hashem said that inviting Syria or not was not on the table initially, given that this summit is an activity organized by the Arab League, which has suspended Syria’s membership in November 2011.

He added that the Arab League’s rules and procedures stipulate that any state with a suspended membership does not get invited to any of the activities organized by the league.

Lebanon did not approve at the time the decision to suspend Syria’s membership, but commits to the majority’s decision.
