LBCI discloses names of EDL collectors that have withheld public funds

EDL contract workers and bill collectors continued their sit-in on Tuesday at the company's headquarters in Corniche el-Nahr.   

Their protest has taken on new dimensions as protesters have been on a hunger strike for two days.   

The protesters built hopes on a meeting taking place between Energy minister Gebran Bassil, Justice Minister Chakib Qortbawi and Interior Minister Marwan Charbel to bring a just solution to this issue.   

The protest is taking place amid standard security measures.           

The protesters rejected remarks made by the general director of Electricité du Liban (EDL), Kamal Hayek, regarding the occupation of the company’s building and the customer lounge.             

Commenting on Hayek’s statement about the 300-billion-LBP bills and documents being at risk in the customer lounge, the member of the contractors committee, Lubnan Makhoul, told LBCI that security forces have been present with the protesters since the beginning of the sit-in.          

Makhoul called on the security forces to tighten security measures in the customer lounge, pointing out a plot against the contract workers. He stressed the need to prevent any person from taking documents outside the building.

In this context, LBCI obtained a list of 156 collectors that have withheld public funds paid by the citizens. The amount of the withheld money exceeds 800 million LBP.
