The Director General of the Ministry of Environment Berj Hatjian revealed that Lebanon does not treat any of the wastewater at any sewer point as per national and international standards.
Al-Akhbar newspaper has also cited Hatjian as saying that the Council for Development and Reconstruction has led the state into debts amounting to one billion USD to establish wastewater treatment plants since the 1990s, while Lebanon fails to treat one cubic meter of these waters.
