Clashes erupt near Air Force Intelligence HQ in Aleppo

Armed opposition fighters fired RPGs Monday night at the military court’s headquarters in Aleppo on Monday night. Syria’s second largest city witnessed clashes with regime troops near the headquarters of the Air Force Intelligence, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.    

International positions:    

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said on Monday that government forces in Syria should be held together when President Bashar al-Assad is forced from power, warning that the mistakes of the Iraq war must not be repeated.    

In an interview with CNN during a visit to Tunisia, he stressed that maintaining stability in Syria would be important under any scenario  which plays out the possible fall of Assad.

"I think it's important when Assad leaves, and he will leave, to try and preserve stability in the country," Panetta said.           

For his part, the Iranian Deputy Chief-of-Staff General Masoud Jazayeri said that Iran will not allow the "enemy" to progress into Syria, but deemed it “unnecessary” to intervene for the time being, the Iranian newspaper Sharq reported on Tuesday.
