Minister Jreissati: Transportation sector is main air pollutant

Minister of Environment Fadi Jreissati asserted on Wednesday that air pollution resulting from the transportation sector is the main source of urban air pollution and consumes more than 40 percent of the oil used and causes 23 percent of greenhouse gas emissions.

He also noted that the proper planning in the environmental management is important since it can preserve resources and rationalize the consumption.

Jreissati also stressed that Lebanon has voluntarily committed itself to increasing its dependence on renewable energy by 12 percent by 2020 and reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 30 percent by 2030 as part of the implementation of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

He also revealed that cooperation is taking place with the Ministry of Energy and Water to pave the way for the use of alternative fuels in the transportation sector.
