Does the draft law on domestic violence really protect women?

The draft law expected to protect women from domestic violence became a law to protect any vulnerable in the family, whether children, adults or anyone living with the family, because there is no other law protecting them.           

This is how the subcommittee charged with studying the law to protect women from domestic violence explains the final formula of this law reached after one year and two months of sessions and debates.       

As for the deputies, they say that they took into account the values maintaining the family, stressing that the law is penal and does not affect the laws of personal status or the powers of the courts.              

No further details are available concerning the draft law; however, it surely holds some advantages, such as tightening sanctions on the offenders and taking into consideration that the woman might be treated violently and raped by her husband.        

The law included the establishment of funds to cover expenses of shelter, assistance, awareness and therapeutic treatments. It also included the establishment of a department in the Internal Security Force where males and females should work to receive complaints and provide social assistance.            

The journey to reach protective law did not end; the draft law still needs to be passed in the Parliament, and the civil society has not yet had the chance to view the details.
