Washington prepares sanctions against Berri’s allies for ties with Hezbollah, Iran-newspaper

The private English-language daily newspaper published in Abu Dhabi, “The National”, revealed on Saturday that the US is preparing sanctions against allies of Lebanon's Speaker Nabih Berri on account of his longstanding ties with Hezbollah and Iran.

The newspaper also noted that the measures could involve officials in Berri's political party as well as its financial backers, according to sources with knowledge of the US plans.

The potential action came under discussion during Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's recent visit to Beirut, triggering a scramble over the past week by Berri to try and avoid the US censure, according to the newspaper.

The daily also noted that two MPs and Berri's spokesman are expected to land in Washington on Sunday for several days of talks with US officials aimed at minimizing the scope of any sanctions.
