Minister Ali Hassan Khalil: Cabinet will begin this week discussing draft budget
Minister of Finance Ali Hassan Khalil said on Monday that the deficit rate increased by 3.5%, stressing the need to reduce the deficit to an acceptable level.

The minister’s comments were made during a conference at the Notre Dame University-Louaize whereby he said that the growth rate did not reach 1.5% last year.

He also stressed that the Lebanese lira is not collapsing but faces challenges, adding that Lebanon is still able to take all measures to meet its international obligations.

On another note, he said that the country imports goods at a cost of 19 billion dollars and all of its exports do not exceed 3 billion dollars, which makes the fiscal deficit reach 15 to 16 billion dollars.

He noted that the delay in forming the new government deferred the work on the state’s budget, adding however that the Ministry of Finance had submitted the budget within the constitutional deadline in August.

He also announced that the Cabinet will begin this week discussing the draft budget for approval.
