Uneasy calm prevails in Tripoli, as Mikati heads security meeting

Prime Minister Najib Mikati chaired a meeting at his residence in Tripoli to discuss the recent incidents taking place in the city of Tripoli.             

The meeting broached means of finding radical solutions to this dilemma that has become a threat to civil peace in Tripoli and all Lebanon.                    

Attending the meeting were Mufti of Tripoli and the North Sheikh Malek Shaar, Ministers Marwan Charbel, Fayez Ghosn, Ahmad Karami, Nicholas Nahhas, Mohammed Safadi and Faisal Karami, in addition to Tripoli deputies, and senior military chiefs.                     

Conferees decided to keep their meetings open, and lauded army and security apparatuses' role in imposing security by all means and arresting fire shooters. Conferees also demanded judiciary to issue judicial orders against whoever tampers with security.                     

Conferees also recommended that Mufti Shaar takes an initiative to gather all sides in the area to consecrate spirit of coexistence and complete the reconciliation which has already been kicked off in the year 2009.             

Later, Premier Mikati held a meeting with Tabbaneh dignitaries, in presence of Minister Marwan Charbel and Internal Security Forces Chief Ashraf Rifi.

Six shells have reportedly hit Tripoli’s wheat market while LAF members, positioned along the line separating between the volatile neighborhoods, responded to the source of gunfire amid constant motorized patrols.    

Ghosn praised the efforts exerted by the city’s figures to help the army restore calm to the city.
