Foreign Affairs Minister Bassil meets UK envoy

Foreign Affairs Minister Gebran Bassil met on Friday with Britain’s Minister for the Middle East and North Africa Andrew Murrison,

During the meeting, Murrison asserted the UK’s continuous support to Lebanon, noting that the majority of the talks that he will hold in Beirut will focus on UK’s support to a strong, stable and prosperous Lebanon.

The British envoy also stressed that the long term partnership between the two countries “is growing day by day,” pointing out that Lebanon and the UK inked the partnership agreement in London, in a step that will strengthen bilateral trade and investment ties between both countries.

“The UK's support for the Lebanese government’s program is continuing and the Cedre Conference, but economic reforms are necessary for Lebanon, especially as time is running out," Murrison said.

On another note, the envoy stressed the importance of the refugee return to their country, adding that the return must be carried out according to International laws.

“However, the Syrian regime is the one preventing refugees from returning to their country currently,” he added.

This as Murrison also tackled the latest Israeli aggression on Lebanon, voicing full support to UN resolutions No. 1559 and 1701.

“According to Lebanese and International laws, no group should possess weapons, since such a thing undermines security and stability in Lebanon, which is already under tremendous pressure at the moment,” he concluded by saying.
